Key points

  • Akshay C receives 3 demerit points, the standard penalty for a really poor joke
  • The joke: “Ground reality, ground me hi rehne deta...” followed by a grimacing emoji
  • Committee says the joke failed on timing, originality and delivery
  • Witnesses report a long pause and one “lol” believed to be out of pity
  • Appeal denied. Five points would trigger a formal warning

Akshay C was handed three demerit points on Monday after cracking what members described as a really poor joke, the group's Standards Committee said in a ruling.

The offending line, now entered into the record, read in full: “Ground reality, ground me hi rehne deta...” It was followed by a grimacing emoji, which the Committee said showed the author knew exactly what he had done.

Witnesses said the joke was delivered with full confidence, followed by a long silence. A single “lol” arrived roughly four minutes later and was widely believed to be out of pity. One member began typing a reply, then stopped.

I have read it four times. I still do not know where the joke was. Committee member, speaking on condition of anonymity

A Committee spokesperson said the pun on “ground” was “visible from a great distance” and that the grimacing emoji counted as an admission. The Committee considered a lighter penalty but ruled the joke too weak to be treated as a first-time slip. Three points is the standard sentence for a joke that needs explaining, and members agreed this one still needed explaining after it had been explained.

What happens next

Akshay C remains in good standing but is advised to keep jokes short, to test them on one person first and to avoid puns until further notice. A repeat offence will go before the full panel and could lead to a ban from group chat comedy for the rest of the week.

Akshay C had not commented at the time of publication. Sources close to the chat said he was “already working on a better one”. The Committee has asked members to brace themselves.
